About Purple

VinylPurple Records was established in 1971 by Deep Purple’s management, Tony Edwards & John Coletta.  As well as housing Deep Purple’s records from “Machine Head” onwards and the various side projects that the band members were developing, Tony and John’s entrepreneurial spirit ensured an eclectic roster of wider artists that they discovered and respected, and a diverse catalogue.

In their own words at the inception of the label:

“We are not going to be limited to ultra-progressive material, but one thing that all our records will have in common is that they will be good music – we are not interested in making three-minute doggerels to get a hit single.”

The label would eventually become home to debut solo releases from Deep Purple’s Jon Lord, Roger Glover, David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, as well as early releases from Yvonne Elliman and Ronnie James Dio with Elf.

Cherry Red are proud to announce the resurrection of Purple Records with a series of reissues beginning in 2016.  Each 2016 reissue features rare memorabilia, exclusive bonus tracks, and liner notes based on new interviews with the artists.
